The Gilman Scholarship is for undergraduate students with Pell Grants. The award pays for students to do academic study and credit-bearing internships abroad. The goal of the program is to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.
Unlike other fellowships, there are two Gilman application cycles each year, one in March and one in October. If you’re planning ahead, you can apply for both of them!
Because it is so important for students to choose an international program that fits their goals, the Office of Global and National Fellowships parters with the Study Abroad office in advising for the Gilman Scholarship.
Interested students should register for and attend a Gilman 101 information session, hosted jointly by the fellowships and study abroad offices, and offered early each semester.
For the spring 2025 semester, we are holding four Gilman 101 sessions:
- Jan. 29 (5–6 p.m. on Zoom)
- Jan. 30 (3–4 p.m. in-person)
- Feb. 5 (10–11 a.m. in person)
- Feb. 6 (5–6 p.m. on Zoom).
Registration will be available shortly through MU Engage. If you can’t attend the session live, email fellowships@missouri.edu.
The information sessions are just the start, however. Students can also:
- Self-enroll in a Canvas course full of resources and application support materials,
- Meet with a study abroad adviser for help choosing their study or internship programs,
- Meet with a fellowships adviser for help starting their applications, and
- Attend writing workshops to revise their application essays.
